More U.S. troops — about 1,115 service members — have been approved for deployment to the U.S.-Mexico border as part of Joint Task Force-Southern Border.

The USS Charleston, an Independence-variant littoral combat ship, departed Naval Base San Diego on Tuesday as part of U.S. Northern Command’s mission to help deter illegal crossings and drug trafficking.

The Guyana Defence Force reported that three separate incidents took place within a 24-hour span near the contested border, though it said no soldiers were injured. It comes amid an increasingly volatile dispute over the Essequibo region — a sparsely populated, resource-rich area that comprises about two-thirds of Guyana’s territory. 

Secretary of State Marco Rubio blacklisted Cuba on Tuesday as a country that did not fully cooperate with U.S. counterterrorism efforts in 2024 and blasted the government in Havana for its refusal to discuss the return of people residing on the island who are charged in the U.S. for various crimes.

The military zone in New Mexico was established recently to give troops the jurisdiction to apprehend migrants crossing unlawfully into the United States from Mexico. But military operations at the southern border have largely remained the same.

Three Marines deployed to the U.S. border with Mexico were following a Border Patrol vehicle with its lights on when the driver swerved to avoid a head-on collision and crashed into a ditch — killing both passengers, according to a local police report.

First Lt. Marciano Parisano, an Army Black Hawk pilot, died in Honduras while off duty, service officials said.

Troops patrolling a new military zone at the U.S. border with Mexico have yet to detain anyone, even as federal charges move forward against more than two dozen migrants for illegally entering the strip of land in New Mexico.
